This week, we had to transript a podcast from the linguist.blogs.com.

Here it is :

"
Hello, this is Steve Kaufmann here. I’ll talk about something a bit different today. Always related to language, we’re here at the linguist.blogs.com.

Today I went for a haircut. My barber talks a lot. Sometimes he even stops cutting just to talk, which I find mildly annoying. On the other hand I am always entertained for 30 minutes while he cuts my hair. He does a good job and charges me 18 dollars, which is not the cheapest, but not the most expensive, haircut in Vancouver.

He told me that he came to Canada as a 16 year old, 20 years ago. He went to hair dressing school and then worked for a chain of hair salons for 5 years, in different locations in the city. He got to know the personalities of different kinds of clients. He didn’t like working in the heavily Chinese district of Richmond because, in his words, the customers would arrive late and expect to be served right away. If they were not served immediately, they assumed that the customer who was being served in their place had paid extra. He did not like the pressure of that situation.

He eventually opened his own shop in North Vancouver. He said that he made sure to learn all about the subjects that his clients were interested in, from fly fishing to the stock market. He knew that if customers liked him, they would come back.

After 20 years in Canada, dealing with English speaking Canadian clients, his English is just terrible. His pronunciation, and use of words, structure, you name it, are all quite poor. When he talked about a leading politician and his wife, "he" and "she" were regularly used wrong. I had trouble understanding who he was talking about. People who are not used to Chinese accents must have trouble understanding him. His English is poor even by the standards of his native Hong Kong.

So what is the conclusion ? He doesn’t represent everyone, but just being immersed in the language and talking the language will not necessarily improve your language skills. You need to want to improve. You need to have a deliberate program of improvement and you need to listen.

On the other hand, my barber has been successful at building up a customer base, and he did not seem to feel inhibited in any way by his poor English. He was a communicator, although a better talker than a listener. I have not suggested to him that he join The Linguist."

How can I write a blog without writing about Bangor ?? Well, to be fair, I just can't help speaking about it all the times... Sorry !!

Anyway.

Bangor is in North Wales. You know, the part of the United Kingdom nobody can never locate ?!? (despite the fact it is as big as Slovenia !!)
Just between the Irish sea and the highest peak in Wales, Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa in Welsh, 1085 m.), Bangor is one of the smallest cities in Great Britain (city meaning a town with a cathedral). It is a university city with a population of more than 13,000, not including around 10,000 students at Bangor University.

Why did I go there ?? Well, I really wanted to go "somewhere I could speak English", so I just asked for the best place to go to study computer science and graphic programming. Didn't know where Bangor was either at that time...

The first thing I did was to join the oldest and best (^^) acting society in Bangor : Rostra. Only a week after signing up, I was auditionning for a part in a play written by a student. Fortunately, all the characters were French and I had "the most convincing French accent" :D

So that's what it was all about : rehearsing in creepy little room in Main Arts (main building of the University which looks somehow like Hogward), acting, going to the pub (the Belle Vue ^^), playing Wii (Guitar Hero and Mario Kart !!), writing plays, cooking curry, dealing with Welsh accent, going to gigs... oh yeah, I also had my course.

I studied Algorithm, Software Hut (how to create software), and Java3D... Not a lot of work in class (10 hours per week or so...), but quite a lot at home... Understanding the lessons wasn't the worst part of it. Java is universal !! Writing report was a bit more of a problem...

I was living in a Student Hall on Ffriddoedd Site (I'm not joking, this is the actual name... and my Hall was Cefn-y-Coed), and I was sharing my corridor with two chinese people I've never been able to understand, Megan, who was hilarious while drunk, Kelly, who dressed once as a smurf, Scott, a huge guy with a very strong accent and a low voice, and Peter, such a lovely little boy whose biggest pleasure was to bang his toy car on my door. And play drums.

It was really really hard to come back home after such a long time in paradise Wales, that's why I wanted to go there again for another semester... But we can only do that in third year !!!

Have to wait a bit, then...
